Start with Why

Simon Sinek has made this an important question in today’s business world, but at the same time it’s a Biblically profound question for all of us to apply in all areas of our life! I’m reading a book now by Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and famous psychologist and author, called Man’s Search for Meaning. In his book, Frankl quotes… “A Man who become conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the “why” for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any “how!”

So, I ask again, when you think about your business and your life, do you know YOUR why?

You should consider applying this question to both business AND your family life!

From a business perspective, Simon Sinek explains why leaders need to incorporate this thinking:

“People don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.”

Every leader and company knows the WHAT. They can describe their products, their industry, and their competitors. Some companies also know HOW they do WHAT they do — their unique differentiators, their value proposition, and their values. But few companies know or articulate their WHY — their purpose, their cause or their belief. The WHY is their reason for being. And the WHY is why anyone should care.

As Christians, our purpose in life, as God originally created man, is 1) glorify God and enjoy fellowship with Him, 2) have good relationships with others, 3) work, and 4) have dominion over the earth. But with man’s fall into sin, fellowship with God is broken, relationships with others are strained, work seems to always be frustrating, and man struggles to maintain any semblance of dominion over nature. Only by restoring fellowship with God, through faith in Jesus Christ, can purpose in life be rediscovered.

So our “Ultimate Why” is to honor God with everything we do. How does that relate to your business and family life. Are you modeling this for your team and family? You CAN run a successful business, understand your personal “WHY” and apply that to every aspect of your life and live in peace and harmony as you represent a true life of integrity!

Remember, the Definition of Integrity:

in·teg·ri·ty

1. the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. “he is known to be a man of integrity”

2. the state of being whole and undivided. “upholding territorial integrity and national sovereignty”
